Towards a political sociology of work: Axel Honneth’s “Democracy and the division of social labor”

Abstract

In this article we present our translation and critical introduction to the text “Democracy and the division of social labor: a blind spot in political philosophy” in which Axel Honneth presents the idea that there is a strong connection between the division of labour and the distribution of participatory changes in the democratic will formation, hence, with the quality of democracy in modern societies. Taking his point of departure in the assumption that contemporary political philosophy rarely reflects upon issues related to the working life of its subjects, the author proposes a systematic actualization of the concept of division of labor, through which not only everyday working activities are taken to be reformulated; rather, the very conception of what is to be seen as work must be reformulated.
