ALBA DE MESQUITA FROTA’S BIOGRAPHY AND THE EDUCATION OF GIRLS IN THE NORMAL COURSE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY

ABSTRACT

The article deals with the history of female education in Ceará, Brazil, with emphasis on training for teaching in the normal course in the city of Fortaleza. The aim was to understand the formation for the magisterium at the beginning of the 20th century at the Colégio da Imaculada Conceição based on the educator Alba de Mesquita Frota’s biography. It was found that the biographer enjoyed good training in the Colégio da Imaculada Conceição, privilege granted to the girls of the economic elite. Her practices earned her some prominence, as she was honored with the denomination of the first preschool from Ceará.
