GENDER, WORK AND TRANSLATION IN THE NARRATIVE CONFRONTATION BETWEEN LUCIANO BIANCIARDI AND MARIA JATOSTI

Abstract

This work proposes a confrontation between two novels characterized by strong autobiographical elements: La vita agra (1962), by Luciano Bianciardi, and Tutto d’un fiato (1977), by Maria Jatosti. In both of them the practice of translation is treated as a profession, an interpersonal bond and an identity marker. In this confrontation between the novels, written by a well-known couple in the Italian literary scene of the second half of the 20th century, the focus of the analysis will be on the female character in the first novel and the narrator in the second. Besides highlighting the dimension of gender in both narratives, this work intends to propose the reading of Jatosti’s novel as a critical intervention to Bianciardi’s already recognized cultural criticism.
