The objective of this study was to quantify the verbal interaction of the patient with his ward mates and with the nursing staff, as well as to identify its distribution between the expressive and instrumental areas. Verbal communication of 10 patients with their ward mates and with the nursing staff has been recorded. Each patient has been observed for nearly 40 hours. The referencial theory of Bales has been used. The results indicate a significant prevalence of instrumental communication of the subjects studied with his ward mates and with the nurses, which indicate that this nursing staff acted in terms of their secondary focus.
