Utilização do "soro caseiro" nas doenças diarréicas: um programa de promotores de saúde do Baixo Amazonas

Oral rehydration, begun at the first signs of diarreal diseass, is an effective treatment in combating rehydration, thus eliminating a dependency on more sofisticated resources and technology for parenteral treatment, and also preventing an ensuing malnourished state. The sucess of oral rehydration therapy is one of the most important recent advances in the area of diarreal disease. The scientific basis for the treatment is the phisiology of glucose mediated sodium transport in the small intestine. In a primary health care program it is imperative that appropriate technology be developed to facilitate the transfer of scientific knowledge to the reality of local conditions. The author works in the rural areas of the Lower Amazon, a region where diarreal disease is still a principal cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. This paper describes the methods used in the promotion and implementation of the use of a "Home-Made" rehydration solution, using village members treined as Health Promotors
