Breastfeeding at day-care nurseries: evaluating opportunities for mothers to feed their children

This work will help us to know and to analyse how is ocurring breastfeeding in two governmental day-care nurseries in the city of São Paulo.

We have chosen this subject due to its relevance for the child as well as for the mother, since it is an opportunity for establishing and strengthening love ties for both.

Just this fact would justify its study, but besides this, breastfeeding provides the child with regulating (through hormones), nutritional, anti-infective and anti-allergic benefits.

Usually, these facts have been much exploited by health and biological literature during the last years, also by social literature. This way of focusing the question justifies itself because the mother that works out can find difficulties (or not) to breastfeed her children. At this point, this approach also is a concern for pediatric-nurses, as the management and technical assistence to child care equipament are also their functions.

With this work we will be able to study what is considered appropriate for the infant and their mothers (breastfeeding), in the context (day-care nursery) where we can find a reasonable number of brazilian women in the city of São Paulo.

We think that analysing this gathered data will give us additional data for knowing the opportunities that nurseries are offering to the mothers to feed their children and to describe the way it is being done, identifying if mothers know about the existence of a breastfeeding legislation; evaluating its application by the institutions responsible for the children's right to be breastfeed and identifying variables that can interfere on the mother's decision to breastfeed or not.
