From class to population in Foucault: considerations on a false alternative

Abstract

The present article pursuit to address the introduction of the problem of population as it puts into play previous analyzes that considered the notions of plebs and class as recipient collective of techniques of power and knowledge. At the beginning of the 1970s, Foucault's analyzes of the notion of power considered a multitude of men as plebs and classes. With the development of the notions of governmentality and biopolitics, this multiplicity of men begins to be analyzed only from the notion of population, in Foucault's attempt to free himself from the notion of class. Thereat, we intent to show that the transition from the notion of class to the notion of population transforms the approach to this collective subject, which does not fail to produce critical effects on previous analyzes regarding the device of sexuality and disciplinary power where the notion of class played a decisive role.
