Evaluation of labial mucous membrane graft for symblepharon repair

SUMMARY

Purpose:

To evaluate labial mucous membrane graft in patients with severe symblepharon.

Methods:

Ten patients were operated for labial mucous membrane graft. Mean age was 47.2 years (range 26-68 years). Symblepharons were caused by trauma, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, recidivous pterygium and cicatricial chronic conjunctivitis.

Results:

The grafts were biopsied after cicatrization. All patients presented nonkeratinizing stratified columnar epithelium without metaplasia.

Conclusion:

Labial mucous membrane grafting has good results in the treatment of patients with severe symblepharon. The mucous membrane does not change its natural histologic aspects when grafted on ocular surface.
