A comparative study of the effect of mitomycin C and thio-thepa on superficial epithelial corneal healing in rabbits

SUMMARY

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the antiproliferative agents, mitomycin C and thio-thepa, on epithelial wound healing in the rabbit cornea.

Using an eye cup made of plastic, the corneal epithelium defects were bathed for 5 minutes with either mitomycin C (in concentrations of 0.02% and 0.04%) and thio-thepa 1:2000. The contralateral fellow eyes, were bathed in balanced salt solution in the eye cup and served as controls.

Thio-thepa 1:2000 has not influenced reepithelialization. When used mitomicyn C in concentrations of 0.02% and 0.04%, were delayed reepithelialization of corneal defects.
