Analysis of the daytime effect of the sky view factor on the microclimate and on thermal comfort levels in pedestrian streets of Curitiba

Urban climate is a result of several variables, including the sky view factor (SVF). The aim of this study is to investigate the diurnal influence of the sky view factor on the microclimate and on comfort levels, in pedestrian streets of Curitiba. Thirteen measurements were made at 15 locations with different urban settings on 4 pedestrian streets. The results show a weak correlation between SVF and microclimate. However, it was possible to verify the relationship between SVF, mean radiant temperature and solar radiation. In addition, the results show the relationship between SVF and the comfort indices PMV and PET. In summer conditions and with lower obstruction of the sky, there was more discomfort caused by heat. However, the same points may present a better comfort situation on days with lower temperatures.
