The novel as a collection of short stories: the shortage in contemporary latin american literature

Abstract

The novel as a collection of short stories has been experiencing a distinct upswing in Latin American literature since about 1989. Among other reasons this may be connected to the paradigm change which the authors of the so-called boom in Latin American literature have carried out to varying degrees. The present article compares the early works of such canonical representatives as Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez with their later works and pursues the question as to what extent a formal aesthetic change in writing took place in both. Short story collections such as El Naranjo, La frontera de cristal and Doce cuentos peregrinos are exemplary when considering the phenomenon of the shortage within the development of the complete works of the early boom authors. Also pursued here are strategies of how to stage this shortage so that allocating this type of text to the genre of the novel is not necessarily futile.
