The absence of afro-descendance in Antonio Cornejo Polar’s cultural heterogeneity. Afro-Peruvianity and Cimarronaje in Nicomedes Santa Cruz

Abstract

The project initiated by Peruvian literary critic Antonio Cornejo Polar acquired great importance by attempting to articulate a Latin American humanistic project. By prioritizing the inclusion of native Peruvian values, the literary critic transcended the guidelines of universal canonical values rooted in the continent, reasserting the importance of a system with an independent and authentic mindset, characterized by features that essentially distinguish Latin America’s episteme. However, Polar fails by not mentioning the relevance and reflections of African contributions in the process of social, cultural and literary development in Peru and Latin America. Thus, this study focuses on the relationship between the legacy of Antonio Cornejo Polar’s critical thinking and the fundaments of Peruvian Afro-descendant contributions in the works of Nicomedes Santa Cruz (2000).
