Open-access TRADE AND EXPORT OF BRAZILWOOD: FROM COLONIAL MONOPOLY TO NATIONAL ASSET. AN ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILWOOD TRADE IN THE PROVINCE OF PERNAMBUCO AT INDEPENDENCE

This article analyzes the transformation of brazilwood from a royal monopoly to a national monopoly during the construction of the national state in Brazil. We focus on the analysis of the trade in the genre from the province of Pernambuco and the surrounding regions to European ports, measuring the role assumed by the industry during independence. Based on the official documents and requests of the Pernambuco Finance Board, we analyze the transformation of tin into a national monopoly, deepening discussions about the role played by brazilwood in international trade and in the negotiations surrounding the recognition of Brazilian independence. The main hypothesis is that brazilwood, acted as a safeguard for the empire in commercial and diplomatic relations with foreign nations in a period marked by political uncertainty.
