This work comments on Edward Baptist's "The Second Slavery and the First American Republic." In it, I emphasize the text's main elements, the concepts of Second Slavery, and the concept of First Republic. My comments focus on the Second Party System and distinct interpretations concerning the role of the Federal State during the period that preceded the American Civil War.
