Cooper metabolism in the epilepsies

Since copper metobolism is disturbed in the epilepsies, the author studied in what form this alterations occurs and, by means of curare-like drugs in mental patients submitted to electroshock, the role played by convulsive induced muscular hyperactivity on copper metabolism is analysed. The author studied also the correlations of sex and age with blood and cerebrospinal copper levels in the epileptic patients. Eight four epileptic patients were studied. Copper was determined in blood samples (81 cases) and. cerebrospinal fluid samples (66 cases). In the mental patients (32 cases) blood ceruloplasmin was determined (22 cases) just after electroshock and blood copper was determined (10 cases) just after electroshock under curare-like drugs. The results were submitted to the conventional statistical analysis and the following conclusions were drawn: 1) the blood and cerebrospinal fluid copper is not dependent on sex or age; 2) the cerebrospinal fluid copper is correlated to the blood copper levels in the epileptic patients; 3) with the supression of the electroshock induced convulsive muscular activity through curare-like drugs, the fall of blood copper content is not significant; 4) the fall of blood copper levels after the electroshock induced convulsion depends on the convulsive muscular hyperactivity; 5) the fall of the blood copper content after electroshock induced is due to the passage of direct reacting copper into cells.
