Undergraduate Students´ Conceptions about Complex Numbers: A Characterization from APOS Theory

Abstract

The teaching and learning of complex numbers in mathematics education have been relatively underexplored. Research indicates that the teaching of these numbers is commonly approached from an algebraic perspective. To contribute to the understanding of complex numbers, this paper presents a characterization of the conceptions held by a group of undergraduate students using the APOS theory. A test was designed and administered to observe their possible mental structures. The results suggest that students have limited elements and conceptions related to the actions involved, primarily concerning the binomial representation of complex numbers within an algebraic register. Additionally, students commence their college studies with fundamental preexisting conceptions related to complex numbers, but these conceptions are not yet integrated with the concept itself.
