Influence of calcium levels combineid with salt concentrations in nutrient solution to aluminum toxicity in wheat cultivars

An experiment was conducted to study the cultivars BH-1146, IAC-17 and Siete Cerros in nutrient solutions containing 10 mg/l of Al3+ combined with three salt concentration (one tenth, one fifth and a half of the salt concentration of the complete nutrient solution) and four levels of Ca (16, 80, 160 and 320 mg/l). The tolerante was evaluated by measuring the root growth in an aluminum-free complete nutrient solution after a treatment of 24, 48 and 72 hours in treatment solutions containing a particular salt concentration combined with a particular level of Ca in the presente of 10 mg/l of Al3+. Independently of the salt concentration, the level of 16 mg/l of Ca into the solution showed all wheat cultivars under study as tolerant when the growth period into the treatment solutions was 24 hours; and 'BH-1146', and 'IAC-17' showed tolerante and 'Siete Cerros' sensitivity to 10 mg/l of Al3+ when the growth period into the treatment solution was 48 and 72 hours. When it was used 80 mg/l of Ca into the treatment solution the same results were obtained, but 'Siete Cerros' presented Al tolerante when it was used treatment solutions with a half of the salt concentration of the complete nutrient solution and the growth period in this solution was 48 and 72 hours. All studied cultivars presented tolerante to Al when it was placed into the treatment solutions 160 and 320 mg/l of Ca, independently of the growth period and of the salt concentration. Aluminum toxicity symptom was increased to all studied cultivara by decreasing the Ca concentration and/or the salt concentration and by increasing the growth period in a treatment solution with 10 mg/l of Al3+.
