Mite-induced injury of the glory bush

A. S. Costa; Ana Maria B. Carvalho

SUMMARY

Plants of Tibouchina mutabilis Cogn. (glory bush) growing in the vicinities of Campinas, Brazil, frequently show curling and mosaic-like spots on the leaves. This type of injury has been associated with the presence of o species of mite, Aciota costae Keifer on the affected leaves.

Transfer of mites from affected plants to healthy ones in the greenhouse induced the appearance of symptoms of the anomaly. Symptoms continued to appear on the newly formed leaves as long as the mite population remained on the infested plants. Leaves formed after the mites were kilied with a miticide spray showed no injury.

The evidence on hand indicates that this type of injury of the glory bush is probably due to direct mite attack, but the possibility that this species acts as the vector of a localized virus has not been excluded.
