SUMMARY

An experiment was installed in Latosolic B Terra Roxa to verify if nitrogen in the form of ammonium sulphate as side dressing, had an effect on yield of upland rice and compared with the organic matter of the soil after four years of continuous soybean cultivation. A randomized block design with five replications was used. The levels of nitrogen applied as side dressing were: 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80kg/ha of N. At the time of planting the formula 4-22-10 was used as fertilizer at the rate of 300kg/ha which means an additional 12kg/ha of N. The early variety of rice "Batatais" was used. The results showed that there was a response to side dressing up to 80kg/ha of N due to good distribution of rainfall. Forty, 60 and 80kg/ha of N increased yield but they also increased vegetative growth. High concentration of nitrogen in the plant could increase the incidence of the blast disease. The recommended rate of nitrogen is 30kg/ha. At the second level, 20kg/ha of N was used as side dressing and 12kg of N at planting time totalling 32kg/ha of N. The difference in yield between zero and 20kg of N applied as side dressing was only 146kg which demonstrates that the rests of soybean incorporated was sufficient to supply part of the nitrogen utilized by the plant.
