National Program for Vitamin A Supplementation: food and nutrition education in the context of Primary Health Care

Abstract

Background

Food and nutrition education is a field of knowledge and continuous and permanent practice, which aims to promote healthy eating habits.

Objective

to present challenges and strengths of food and nutrition education actions carried out in the National Vitamin A Supplementation Program in municipalities of Minas Gerais, in the context of Primary Health Care.

Method

This is a cross-sectional study carried out in 105 municipalities. A total of 202 professionals, nurses, and nutritionists participated, who answered an online questionnaire.

Results

Lack of adherence and difficulty in accessing the population, lack of technical and professional nutritionist reference, failures in group activities, insufficient support from the municipal management, the community, and the leadership of the Program's reference were some of the difficulties reported in terms of achievement actions of food and nutrition education. As a positive point, actions to support exclusive breastfeeding were identified.

Conclusion

The results point to important elements to support decision-making in primary health care about educational actions in the field of food and nutrition.
