On a convective condition in the diffusion of a solvent into a polymer Gaudiano, Marcos Godoy, Tomás Turner, Cristina

Resumen en Inglés:

We studied a one-dimensional free boundary problem arising in the polymer industry, which solution has an interesting asymptotic behavior when a convective boundary condition is imposed. We show the asymptotic behavior of the free boundary and of the concentration of the solvent in the domain, for large t. Exact estimates and numerical results are obtained.
A note on the Riemann problem for the random transport equation Cunha, Maria Cristina de Castro Dorini, Fábio Antonio

Resumen en Inglés:

We present an explicit expression to the solution of the random Riemann problem for the 1D random linear transport equation. We show that the random solution is a similarity solution and the statistical moments have very simple expressions. Furthermore, we verify that the mean, the variance, and the 3rd central moment agree quite well with Monte Carlo simulations. We point out that our approach could be useful in designing numerical methods for more general random transport problems.
A sequential quadratic programming algorithm that combines merit function and filter ideas Gomes, Francisco A.M.

Resumen en Inglés:

A sequential quadratic programming algorithm for solving nonlinear programming problems is presented. The new feature of the algorithm is related to the definition of the merit function. Instead of using one penalty parameter per iteration and increasing it as the algorithm progresses, we suggest that a new point is to be accepted if it stays sufficiently below the piecewise linear function defined by some previous iterates on the (f,||C||2²)-space. Therefore, the penalty parameter is allowed to decrease between successive iterations. Besides, one need not to decide how to update the penalty parameter. This approach resembles the filter method introduced by Fletcher and Leyffer [Math. Program., 91 (2001), pp. 239-269], but it is less tolerant since a merit function is still used. Numerical comparison with standard methods shows that this strategy is promising.
Rheodynamic lubrication of a squeeze film bearing under sinusoidal squeeze motion Kandasamy, A. Vishwanath, K.P.

Resumen en Inglés:

Lubricants with variable viscosity are assuming importance for their applications in polymer industry, thermal reactors and in biomechanics. With the bearing operations in machines being subjected to high speeds, loads, increasing mechanical shearing forces and continually increasing pressures, there has been an increasing interest to use non-Newtonian fluids characterized by an yield value. The most elementary constitutive equation in common use that describes a material which yields is that of Bingham fluid. In the present work, the problem of a circular squeeze film bearing lubricated with Bingham fluid under the sinusoidal squeeze motion has been analyzed. The shape and extent of the core for the case of sinusoidal squeeze motion has been determined numerically for various values of the Bingham number. Numerical solutions have been obtained for the bearing performances such as pressure distribution and load capacity for different values of Bingham number, Reynolds number and for various amplitudes of squeeze motion. The effects of fluid inertia, non-Newtonian characteristics, and the amplitudes of squeeze motion on the bearing performances have been discussed.
On a discrete West Nile epidemic model Jang, Sophia R.-J.

Resumen en Inglés:

A West Nile epidemic model in discrete-time is proposed. The model consists of two interacting populations, the vector and the avian populations. The avian population is classified into susceptible, infective, and recovered classes while an individual vector is either susceptible or infective. The transmission of the disease is assumed only by mosquitoes bites and vertical transmission in the vector population. The model behavior depends on a lumpedparameter R0. The disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if R0 < 1. The system is uniformly persistent and possesses a unique endemic equilibrium if R0 > 1. Consequently, the disease can persist in the populations if R0 > 1.
Euclidean distance matrices: special subsets, systems of coordinates and multibalanced matrices Tarazaga, Pablo Sterba-Boatwright, Blair Wijewardena, Kithsiri

Resumen en Inglés:

In this paper we present special subsets of positive semidefinite matrices where the linear function k becomes a geometric similarity and its inverse can be easily computed. The images of these special subsets are characterized geometrically. We also study the systems of coordinates for spherical matrices and at the end, we introduce the class of multibalanced distance matrices.
