Industrial test of heavy clay ceramic incorporated with fluorescent lamp waste

Abstract

The increasing consumption and disposal of fluorescent lamps has raised concerns about the disposal of generated waste. One possibility for environmentally correct disposal of lamp glass is its incorporation into heavy clay ceramics for civil construction. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effect of using 30 wt% of a fluorescent lamp glass powder, decontaminated of mercury, on the physical and mechanical properties of heavy clay ceramic produced in an industrial scale. The environmental assessment of the fired ceramics was carried out by leaching and solution tests. The results indicated that the waste significantly improves the evaluated properties. With respect to the environmental assessment, the fluorescent lamp glass does not change an eventual classification of the ceramic when it becomes a waste material.
