Solid waste minimization in Sweden: management proposals for Brazilian municipalities

Abstract

Recycling waste require rules, social participation, and adequate infrastructure for collection of discarded material. The international and national structures and rules that govern solid waste management in Sweden enable to reduce the discarded volume. In this context, the article aims to examine the institutional arrangements for solid waste management services in the Stockholm Metropolitan Area and their minimization effects on the volume sent to final disposal. The methodology used in the study is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative analysis. The institutional arrangements implemented by Sweden have contributed to the fulfilment of national and international objectives proposed for the country and can inspire an improvement in the management of these services in Brazil.
