Instructional coaching in continuing education for language teachers: a study focusing on therapeutic experiences

ABSTRACT

In this qualitative study, we investigated how continuing education through instructional coaching (Knight, 2007, 2009; Cunha, 2014) may trigger therapeutic experiences to the foreign language teacher due to the human bonding established. We defined therapeutic experiences as experiences in which a person is affected and therefore learns healthy ways of being and acting in the world. We audio-recorded and transcribed 15 instructional coaching sessions delivered to a public school teacher during the school year 2012. In addition, we carried out semi-structured interviews with the students. Data analyses showed that the instructional coaching process, through the interaction between the coach and the teacher, had therapeutic effects on the teacher’s professional life.
