The morphosyntax of X-V compounds in English

ABSTRACT

This paper analyses X-V compound forms in English and emphasizes the syntactic process through which these compounds are derived. The main hypothesis takes as its starting point the fact that the grammar has only one computational component and this component is Syntax, which governs the operations of Merge and Move and which is responsible for the generation of hierarchical structures. This generative mechanism is able to derive these compounds through concatenative processes of word formation, without recurring to back-formation processes to account for this data.
