The semantic-enunciative functioning of sumir [vanish]/desaparecer [disappear], and cortar [cut] in bp

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the semantic-enunciative analysis of the verbal lexemes cortar [cut], sumir [vanish], and desaparecer [disappear] in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). To that end, it applies the framework of the Theory of Enunciative Operations by Antoine Culioli, in the field of Enunciation Linguistics, whose analytical and methodological foundation is the elaboration of glosses. The collection and analysis of countless examples, both from dictionaries and the internet, allowed for the description of the semantic identity of each verbal lexeme. Such description explains the constitutive singularity of two verbs that are seen in many linguistic contexts as synonyms (sumir [vanish], and desaparecer [disappear]) and reveals how the senses known as “connotative” are also semantic constructions derived from the logic of the interaction between a verbal lexeme, such as cortar [cut], and the other units of the sentence.
