The Data Life Cycle in the context of User eXperience Research

ABSTRACT

Objective:

The growing number of users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has influenced the growth of scientific research concerned with studying human-computer relationships. Based on the research methods and techniques for data collection in User eXperience, this work seeks a rereading in the context of the Data Life Cycle reflecting how these occur in the other phases - storage, retrieval, and disposal.

Methods:

This article has a descriptive methodological approach and addresses the issue of data access by researchers in the context of User eXperience, based on the Information Science view of the phases of the Data Life Cycle.

Results:

The importance of planning including all four phases of research was highlighted. The practices seek to contribute to structuring the researcher's outlook. Especially on issues such as the elaboration of a data management plan, the possible future use of the data, the replicability of the research, user privacy with the current laws on personal data protection, and the structuring of the data for machine interpreting.

Conclusions:

Planning in the context of the Data Life Cycle is relevant for User eXperience research. Enables the researcher to think about short and long-term data access and use. Even the transversal factors that permeate all these phases of the Data Life Cycle can be extrapolated and adapted to other research realities.
