Working time on digital platforms: the essence of workers’ time

Abstract

This article addresses the impacts of the new way of organizing the production process, by using the new technologies, on working time, particularly the impacts on workers’ working time on digital platforms. To that end, it briefly discusses the old ways of organizing the production process and analyzes the composition of workers’ time. It then assesses the impacts of the new way of managing the workforce by algorithmic control and gamification on the three dimensions of working time: extension, intensity, and distribution. The study concludes that the new management techniques have a strong impact on the three dimensions of working time: they increase the length of working time, intensify the pace, and change the distribution, making the workforce available seven days a week and 24 hours a day.
