Do the career ladders honor the best teachers?

This paper presents a discussion on the criteria for progression in teachers' career ladder. Initially, the teachers' roles among the contemporary society, as well as their importance will be discussed. Then, the teachers improvement related to their own activities will also be discussed. Later, some national and foreign researches focused on teaching characteristics which affect students outcomes will be examined. The following topic intends to identify the Brazilian legislation related to the teachers' career ladder. Finally, the criteria and characteristics of the teachers' career ladder in Barreiras City, Bahia, Brazil, are described. Nowadays, this city is on a disjunctive situation between caring about teachers' proposals and its commitment with future budgets. The conclusions of this article indicate that career ladders, are generally based on aspirations, desires and assumptions. It is suggested that these career ladders prioritize the teachers characteristics which have an effect on the students' performance, since they are teachers and schools principal aim.
