Social trajectories and identity forms: Some conceptual and methodological considerations

The analysis of social trajectories faces two aspects of the life process. The "objective trajectory" is defined as the sequence of social positions taken during one's life, measured by statistical categories and summarised in a general tendency (ascending, descending, stable etc.). By contrast, the "subjective trajectory" is expressed by several biographical accounts, measured by native categories that point out to "social worlds", summarised in heterogeneous identity forms. It is necessary to confront both analysis as we try to understand the social identity as a process both biographical and institutional. Does the concept of "configuration", as presented by Elias, enable us to combine typical biographical processes (subjective accounts) to objective trajectories (statistical categories)?
