Teaching quality: examining a decade of research

ABSTRACT:

This paper offers an overview of a research program which investigated the teaching quality in some of the most prestigious schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro as portrayed by national evaluation rankings. A decade of research in prestigious schools in the private and public sector, by means of questionnaires (among students, families and teachers), field observations in thirteen schools and interviews with families, principals and schools agents provided us with important empirical material about the issue. Based on this material we pointed the permanence of social and structural inequalities among different classes and groups deriving from School Evaluation Policies, both, in the national and international scenario.
