Postural alterations prevalence in weight training practitioners

INTRODUCTION: Currently, gyms are promotion of health centers wanted by a growing number of people. The adequate execution of resistance exercises on gym depends of a good postural alignment. OBJECTIVE: To check quantitatively the major postural alterations in practitioners of systematized resistance exercise (strength training). METHODS: Postural evaluations were performed on 306 subjects, of the both genders and age between 14 and 73 years. The evaluations were performed by physiotherapy students properly trained and standardized so that data were collected from more objective way possible. RESULTS: The results are presented of general way (total of sample), in addition to divided by male (n=113) and female (n=193) genders and according their age, adopting the following categories: under 21 years (n=74); between 21 and 30 years (n=127); between 31 and 50 years (n=40); and above 50 years (n=65). Among the results, is highlighted the alterations on spine (increase of curvature or retification): 43.3% on neck, 55.2% on thoracic and 73.8% on lumbar region. Besides, 48.0% showed scoliotic attitude, being that in 37.0% were observed the presence of bump. CONCLUSIONS: The major conclusion of the present study is the weight training practitioners have considerable rates of postural deviations, emphasizing the necessity of increased focus on this growing population.
