Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation in Parkinson's disease: report of therapeutic efficacy

INTRODUCTION: The Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) can be a choice between the several existing physiotherapeutic treatments to the Parkinson's disease (PD) patient. The PNF can help the PD patient to achieve an efficiently motor function, but a small number of studies investigated the effects of such treatment's approach in this population. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to explore the effects of a physiotherapeutic intervention based on PNF in subjects with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four subjects aged 65,25 ± 10,11 years old and PD diagnostic were evaluated and treated. The evaluations were conducted before and after the treatment period, which took two months. It was used the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS, the life quality questionnaire (SF36) and a software of postural analysis (SAPO). RESULTS: The results revealed that the treatment based on PNF promoted improvement in all individuals studied, mainly in the kinetic-functional aspects and execution of daily life activities. CONCLUSIONS: All these improvements can be related to the therapy based on PNF, once it included total corporal activities that can be easily incorporated in the daily activities.
