This text is about the process of translation. The text is an anthropology text and the translator is an anthropologist. The ethnography O Vapor do Diabo: o trabalho dos operários do açúcar (The Devil's Steam: work in a sugar factory) was written by José Sergio Leite Lopes in 1976. The research required to undertake this particular translation is underlined and the author's participation in this process is made central. By describing key decisions in the process it is argued that ethnographies should be translated by anthropologists.
