Social media platforms and paid domestic work in Brazil: social change and political implications

Abstract

This article examines the emerging changes in paid domestic work resulting from the expansion of social networking platforms in Brazil. The text is based on fieldwork conducted for approximately twelve months, which included online observation and informal conversations, as well as in-depth interviews with wageless domestic workers who live in Rio de Janeiro and its metropolitan area, Baixada Fluminense. The analysis of the empirical material seeks to explore the contradictory aspects of domestic work in the first decades of the 21st century. It explores how social media use changed how workers learn the skills for the job, the dynamics of professional reputation, the creation of new networks, and forms of political subjectivity.
