Resumo Neste número de Horizontes Antropológicos propomos colocar o corpo no centro da cena complexa do que é, ou pode ser, fazer antropologia hoje. Quais as formas teóricas e metodológicas com que o corpo tem sido reelaborado uma e outra vez na antropologia brasileira? Como chegar no corpo a partir de teorias contra-hegemônicas, negras, indígenas, puta/transfeministas e, inclusive, contrateóricas, ou através de ontologias exógenas à moderna? Será que é possível defender uma antropologia do corpo diante dos (des)caminhos tanto da “antropologia” quanto do “corpo”? Essas são algumas das perguntas que guiam este número e que, esperamos, possam contribuir com o tempo de incerteza que vivemos neste primeiro quarto do século XXI; no qual corpos, antropologias e horizontes experimentamos condições escatológicas e larvárias.

Abstract In this issue of Horizontes Antropológicos, we propose placing the body at the center of the complex scene of what it is - or could be - to do anthropology today. What are the theoretical and methodological forms through which the body has been repeatedly re-elaborated in Brazilian anthropology? How can we approach the body through counter-hegemonic, Black, Indigenous, putafeminists/ transfeminists, and even counter-hegemonic theoretical perspectives, or through ontologies exogenous to modernity? Is it possible to defend an anthropology of the body in the face of the derailments of both “anthropology” and the “body”? These are some of the questions that guide this issue and that, we hope, can contribute to navigate the uncertain times we are experiencing in this first quarter of the 21st century - times in which bodies, anthropologies, and horizons are undergoing eschatological and larval conditions.

Resumo Esse artigo é parte de uma pesquisa maior com homens brasileiros que fazem trabalho sexual na Europa. Na presente análise, articulo uma reflexão em torno da antropologia, da etnografia e do trabalho de campo. Relaciono esses pontos com questões que atravessam o corpo e o sexo do antropólogo, seus desejos e prazeres que precisaram ser administrados durante a realização da investigação. As reflexões sobre desejo, prazer e sexo em campo já existem há algumas décadas, mas ainda não parecem consolidadas no âmbito da disciplina. Problematizo esse tema a partir de algumas experiências vividas por mim com dois interlocutores durante a realização de minha pesquisa etnográfica e que penso serem potentes para uma discussão sobre ética na investigação antropológica.

Abstract This article is part of a larger research project with Brazilian men who work in the sex industry in Europe. In this analysis, I articulate a reflection on anthropology, ethnography, and fieldwork. I relate these points to issues that traverse the body and sex of the anthropologist, their desires and pleasures that had to be managed during the investigation. Reflections on desire, pleasure, and sex in the field have existed for several decades but do not yet seem consolidated within the discipline. I problematize this theme based on some experiences I lived with two interlocutors during the ethnographic research and which I think are potent for a discussion on ethics in anthropological research.

Resumo Nesse artigo irei analisar a relação entre corpo, trabalho e sacrifício. Especificamente, essa análise terá como base a experiência de trabalhadoras e trabalhadores de uma comunidade do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto, parto de meu trabalho de campo em uma colônia alemã da região da Encosta da Serra, comunidade de pouco mais de 6 mil habitantes, com os quais convivo, em distintos períodos de campo, desde 2011. Especificamente, iremos acompanhar o caso de Olavo Klein, colono, que veio a falecer em 2022. O argumento deste trabalho é que, quando o capitalismo se organiza em um universo no qual o trabalho é o principal qualitativo de uma vida moral, dedicar-se ao trabalho pode se tornar uma sentença e uma consagração. Leva mulheres e homens à exaustão irrefreável ao longo da vida, produzindo um corpo sacrificado e sacrificável, de valor monetário e moral.

Abstract This paper analyzes the relationship between body, work and sacrifice. Specifically, the analysis conducted along the paper is based on the experience of workers from a community in Southern Brazil. To this end, I start from my fieldwork in a German colony (colônia, in Portuguese), a small size community, with where I have lived, in different periods, since 2011. Specifically, we will follow the case of Olavo Klein, an inhabitant from this colônia, who died in 2022. As an argument, this paper aims to present how dedicating oneself to work can become a live sentence and consecration, when capitalism is organized into a universe in which work is the main quality of a moral life. It leads women and men to unstoppable exhaustion throughout their lives, producing a sacrificial body, with monetary and moral value.

Resumo Este texto se volta para os caminhos de Xaí, uma parteira do povo guarani mbya que adoeceu pelo que reconheceu como algo feito (ojapo pyre) em seu ventre, divergindo do diagnóstico biomédico de um câncer. Ao longo de uma década, ela compartilhou comigo experiências e conhecimentos sobre cuidados envolvendo o nascimento, a formação do corpo e suas transformações, e também como ele pode ser desfeito por malfeitos, feitiços. Acompanhando seu itinerário por diferentes aldeias e relações, que em seus últimos anos passou a incluir também instituições biomédicas, o texto aborda como políticas ontológicas da medicina (no sentido de Mol e Law) se cruzam e se tensionam com políticas ontológicas do xamanismo na feitura de corpos e doenças.

Abstract This text follows the paths of Xaí, a midwife of the Guarani Mbya people who became ill due to what she recognized as something done (ojapo pyre) in her womb, diverging from the biomedical diagnosis of cancer. Over the course of a decade, she shared with me her experiences and knowledge about care practices involving birth, the formation of the body and its transformations, and also how it can be undone by misdeeds and spells. Following her itinerary through different villages and relationships, which in her later years also include biomedical institutions, the text explores how the ontological politics of medicine (in the sense of Mol and Law) intersect and come into tension with the ontological politics of shamanism in the making of bodies and diseases.

Resumo A intensa mobilidade é uma característica notada no contexto de travestis que atuam nos mercados do sexo. Os estudos sobre o tema costumam enfatizar que essa mobilidade possui relação com um projeto de refinamento, ascensão social, maior bem-estar social, simbólico e econômico, além de servir como um projeto de transformação e embelezamento dos corpos. Com base em um trabalho etnográfico realizado entre 2016 e 2020 nas cidades de São Carlos (SP), Franca (SP) e Campo Grande (MS), argumento que os corpos deslocados, no sentido de transitar por lugares e de modificações físicas, não são resultado de um projeto ou de um imperativo colocado por condições socioeconômicas. No contexto observado os corpos deslocados são um modo de estar no mundo, as transformações corporais ocorrem durante os deslocamentos, não em função deles. Seguindo esse argumento sugiro que esses corpos oferecem a possibilidade de serem lidos como um tropo da recusa da contemporaneidade, não como resistência, mas como potencialidade de criação.

Abstract Intense mobility is a noted characteristic in the context of travestis working in the sex markets. Studies on this subject often emphasize that this mobility is related to a project of refinement, social ascension, greater social, symbolic, and economic well-being, as well as serving as a project of transformation and beautification of bodies. Based on ethnographic research conducted between 2016 and 2020 in the cities of São Carlos (SP), Franca (SP), and Campo Grande (MS), I argue that displaced bodies, in the sense of moving through places and undergoing physical modifications, are not the result of a project or an imperative imposed by socioeconomic conditions. In the observed context, displaced bodies are a way of being in the world; bodily transformations occur during displacements, not because of them. Following this argument, I suggest that these bodies offer the possibility of being read as a trope of the refusal of contemporaneity, not as resistance, but as the potentiality of creation.

Resumo O artigo desenvolve uma reflexão crítica com a deficiência para compreender a diversidade da percepção e das formas corporais de estar no mundo, convidando a um deslocamento do corpo normativo, conforme os contornos que lhe são impostos pela matriz colonial-capitalista. O desafio de tradução de uma corporalidade e modos outros de conhecimento na deficiência é uma tarefa que exige uma erosão constante da armadura de uma normalidade corporal. A proposta leva adiante o exercício de descolonização do corpo normativo assumindo o estatuto integral dos corpos defiças como corporalidades singulares e criadoras de mundos. Enfatiza-se a construção social e histórica dos ideais de (a)normalidade, os enquadramentos por meio dos quais as vidas de pessoas com deficiência são constituídas e as possíveis subversões no que se entende convencionalmente por deficiência e normalidade, confrontando a matriz de inteligibilidade normativa - e naturalizada - de nossos próprios corpos.

Abstract This article develops a critical reflection with disability in order to understand the diversity of perception and bodily ways of being in the world, inviting a displacement of the normative body, according to the contours imposed on it by the colonial-capitalist model. The challenge of translating a corporeality and other modes of knowledge in disability is a task that requires constant erosion of the framework of bodily normality. The aim is to carry out the exercise of decolonizing the normative body by assuming the integral status of disabled bodies as singular corporealities that create worlds. It emphasizes the social and historical construction of ideals of (a)normality, the frameworks through which the lives of people with disabilities are constituted and the possible subversions of what is conventionally understood as disability and normality, confronting the normative - and naturalized - standard of intelligibility of our own bodies.

Resumo Os pelos corporais e faciais são relativamente definidos em padrões masculino e feminino através de características como quantidade, distribuição, textura, pigmentação e densidade. A cartografia do dimorfismo sexual a partir dos pelos corporais serve como ponto de partida para investigar (auto)etnograficamente a materialização da cisgeneridade. Analisa-se um conjunto de eventos e situações relacionadas à remoção de pelos corporais que ocorreram entre 2008 e 2018. Com base nos estudos sociais e feministas da ciência, objetiva-se lançar luz às dinâmicas performativas através das quais o corpo se materializa e as diferenças que importam nessa materialização. Apresenta-se a cisgeneridade como um elemento produtivo de fronteiras e substâncias nas experiências corpóreas de pessoas cis e trans, o que chamei de aparato material-discursivo de produção corporal. Conclui-se que a remoção de pelos corporais não é algo natural, mas um fenômeno material-discursivo que produz detalhada e ferrenhamente certas características físicas e padrões de gênero.

Abstract Body and facial hair are relatively defined in masculine and feminine patterns through characteristics such as quantity, distribution, texture, pigmentation, and density. The cartography of sexual dimorphism based on body hair serves as a starting point for (auto)ethnographically investigating matterings of cisness. A set of events and situations related to body hair removal that occurred between 2008 and 2018 is analyzed. Based on social and feminist studies of science, the aim is to shed light on the detailed performative dynamics through which the body materializes and the differences that matter in this materialization. Cisness is presented as a productive element of boundaries and substances in the bodily experiences of cis and trans people, which I referred to as the material-discursive apparatus of bodily production. It is concluded that body hair removal is not a natural process but a material-discursive phenomenon that meticulously and rigorously shapes certain physical characteristics and patterns of gender.

Resumo Este artigo analisa os modos de produção das corporalidades entre jovens negras boxeadoras no Rio de Janeiro e evidencia como essas experiências estão envoltas em tensões de estruturas raciais, de classe, de gênero e sexualidade e expressam as lutas pelo reconhecimento das subjetividades negras como locais cruciais no processo de descolonização. Ofereço reflexões em torno do que chamo de “ontologias musculares fugitivas”, isto é, respostas corporais criadas em contextos de violência racial e de gênero. Ao criarem táticas de autodefesa, as boxeadoras criam, coetaneamente, um projeto político do que é ser menina negra e do que é se tornar mulher negra no Brasil. Por fim, dou ênfase na luta por direitos em territórios de favelas através de uma investida nas corporalidades em contraste com visões normativas que pregam pelo valor universal desses direitos e vislumbro o campo da corporalidade como lugar analítico para abordar o tema dos direitos humanos.

Abstract This article analyzes the modes of production of corporealities among young Black female boxers in Rio de Janeiro and highlights how these experiences are surrounded by tensions of racial, class, gender and sexuality structures and express the struggles for the recognition of Black subjectivities as crucial sites in the process of decolonization. I offer reflections on what I call “fugitive muscular ontologies”, that is, bodily responses created in contexts of racial and gender violence. By creating self-defense tactics, the boxers simultaneously create a political project of what it means to be a Black girl and what it means to become a Black woman in Brazil. Finally, I emphasize the struggle for rights in favela territories through an onslaught on corporealities in contrast to normative visions that preach the universal value of these rights and I envision the field of corporeality as an analytical place to address the issue of human rights.

Resumo Este texto ocupa-se em descrever os encontros dos corpos humanos com os corpos não humanos em laboratórios destinados ao treino das habilidades técnicas nas escolas de medicina e objetiva problematizar a formação médica, que ocorre por meio dos manequins de simulação com corpos sintéticos, destacando o racismo genderificado. Etnografar os laboratórios de habilidades nos demandou uma investigação orientada pela teoria/método ator-rede desenvolvida por Bruno Latour, mas com inspiração na fenomenologia de Thomas Csordas e a noção de embodiment. O que trazemos é um fragmento da pesquisa multisituada e mais ampla intitulada “Corpos educando corpos” das modulações do self expressas na corporeidade dos estudantes. Neste artigo problematizamos as estratégias contemporâneas de ocultamento da população negra feminina nos espaços de formação nos laboratórios de habilidades, reproduzindo o “pacto narcísico da branquitude”.

Abstract This text is concerned with describing the encounters between human bodies and non-human bodies in laboratories designed to train technical ability in medical schools and aims to problematize medical training, which occurs through simulation mannequins with synthetic bodies, highlighting racism gendered. Ethnographing the ability laboratories required an investigation guided by the actor-network theory/method developed by Bruno Latour, but inspired by the phenomenology of Thomas Csordas and the notion of embodiment. What we bring is a fragment of the multi-sited and broader research entitled “Bodies educating bodies” of the modulations of the self expressed in the corporeality of students. In this article we problematize contemporary strategies for hiding the black female population in training spaces in ability laboratories, reproducing the “narcissistic pact of whiteness”.

Resumo Este trabalho tem como foco central os dilemas na produção de conhecimento sobre corpo, emoções, comportamento e saúde nas neurociências de um ponto de vista etnográfico. Mais especificamente, aborda-se aqui o trabalho de um centro de pesquisas que realizava experimentos com universitários, militares e pacientes psiquiátricos. Centro este que tinha por intuito investigar questões relativas ao chamado transtorno do estresse pós-traumático (TEPT), entre outras problemáticas relacionadas à violência urbana e, nos termos êmicos, “situações aversivas” da vida de um modo mais geral. Para compreender a centralidade adquirida pelo corpo nas práticas neurocientíficas de conhecimento, buscou-se acompanhar então o cotidiano efervescente das dinâmicas laboratoriais. Procurou-se ainda atentar para as controvérsias intrínsecas a uma atividade científica que discute possíveis ontologias para o humano e seus sofrimentos.

Abstract This paper focuses on the dilemmas in the production of knowledge about the body, emotions, behavior, and health in neuroscience from an ethnographic perspective. More specifically, it addresses the work of a research center that conducted experiments with university students, military personnel, and psychiatric patients. The center aimed to investigate issues related to the so-called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among other problems related to urban violence and, in emic terms, “aversive situations” in general. In order to understand the centrality acquired by the body in neuroscientific knowledge practices, we sought to follow the effervescent daily routine of laboratory dynamics. We also sought to pay attention to the controversies intrinsic to a scientific activity that discusses possible ontologies for humans and their suffering.

Resumen El artículo desarrolla una perspectiva técnica acerca de los vínculos humano-animales, deteniéndose en la mediación efectuada por los fluidos y por los órganos corporales. Con base en los mitos amerindios compilados por Lévi-Strauss, se analizan los lazos interespecie en el marco de ensamblajes, compuestos por operaciones que imbrican lo artefactual y lo viviente. El marsupial americano zarigüeya, vinculado a la introducción de la agricultura entre los humanos, provee el hilo conductor de la reflexión, que pone en discusión el carácter abstracto del vínculo humano-animal, reemplazándolo por formatos de simbolización asociados a lo concreto y mediados por la materia viviente. Las operaciones técnicas que conectan a humanos y animales incluyen la transformación de los fluidos corporales en alimentos, así como la incorporación de los artefactos a los procesos orgánicos mediante formas descomposición y recomposición del cuerpo.

Abstract The article develops a technical perspective on human-animal bonds, focusing on the mediation carried out by bodily fluids and organs. Based on the Amerindian myths compiled by Lévi-Strauss, interspecies ties are analyzed within the framework of assemblages, composed of operations that overlap the artifactual and the living. The American marsupial opossum, linked to the introduction of agriculture among humans, provides the guiding thread of the reflection, which questions the abstract nature of the human-animal link, replacing it with symbolization formats associated with the concrete and mediated by living matter. The technical operations that connect humans and animals include the transformation of bodily fluids into food, as well as the incorporation of artifacts into organic processes through forms of decomposition and recomposition of the body.

Resumo O propósito é mapear a noção de corpo, tendo como horizonte os desdobramentos teóricos feministas e antirracistas que permitem dar conta de compreender os efeitos e implicações de dispositivos biotecnológicos dos quais emergem novos corpos, novas fisiologias, bem como concepções do humano que implodem os limites da pele. A reflexão pretende adensar e colocar em relação a problemática do corpo e da corporalidade tomada em sua materialidade, assim como o debate sobre vitalismo e entendimento da vida a partir de abordagens que esgarçam os limites antropocêntricos, lançando um olhar atento à maneira como o corpo está inscrito em dimensões centrais da disciplina, tal como a relação entre natureza e cultura, indivíduo e sociedade. A partir do caso etnográfico revela-se que a raça, ou ainda, sua intersecção a outros marcadores sociais da diferença, atravessam o debate sobre corpo e saúde, revelando-se um operador do problema da distinção entre Natureza e Cultura.

Abstract The purpose is to map the notion of body, taking feminist and anti-racist theoretical developments as a horizon to understand the effects and implications of biotechnological devices from which new bodies, new physiologies, and conceptions of the human emerge, imploding the limits of the skin. The reflection aims to deepen the problematic of the body and embodiment taken in its materiality, as well as the debate on vitalism and the understanding of life from approaches that fray anthropocentric boundaries, directing attention on how the body is inscribed in central dimensions of the discipline, such as the relationship between nature and culture, individual and society. Based on the ethnographic case, it is revealed that race, or even its intersection with other social markers of difference, permeates the debate on body and health, revealing to be an operator of the distinction between Nature and Culture.

Resumo Este artigo explora a centralidade e as limitações do corpo dentro de um estudo etnográfico realizado na Comuna 13 de Medellín, Colômbia. Por um lado, o autor destaca as vantagens de empregar etnografias a pé para gerar conhecimento corpóreo, situado e “emplaced”. Por outro lado, o autor reconhece as limitações inerentes de depender exclusivamente do corpo para navegar na complexa interação entre forças estruturais e experiências vividas. Para abordar isso, ele propõe integrar a abordagem fenomenológica com a “teoria do agenciamento.” Ao combinar essas duas abordagens, este artigo tem como objetivo contribuir para as discussões sobre o corpo e oferecer insights valiosos para estudiosos interessados em estudos urbanos.

Abstract This paper discusses the centrality and constraints of the body based on an ethnographic fieldwork in Comuna 13 of Medellín, Colombia. On one hand, the author highlights the methodological advantages of the body, supported by photography, to generate embodied, situated, “emplaced” knowledge. Conversely, the author acknowledges the inherent constraints of relying solely on the body to navigate the complex interplay between structural forces and lived experiences. To address this, this paper proposes integrating the embodied-visual approach with the “assemblage theory.” By combining these two approaches, this paper aims to contribute to the discussions about the body and to offer insights for scholars engaged in urban studies.

Resumo A partir de pesquisa em curso sobre a memória de eventos violentos, este ensaio volta-se para o exílio contemporâneo, como deslocamento forçado que muda as circunstâncias da vida, por imposições incontornáveis. Seja qual for sua forma e circunstância, o exílio, experiência disruptiva por definição, é atravessado pela dor. Com base nas figuras do exilado político, aquele que emerge nas ditaduras latino-americanas do século XX, e do refugiado, como figura emblemática do exílio atual, interroga-se o sofrimento como experiência subjetiva associada ao esvaziamento ou apagamento do sentido político do exílio em sua forma contemporânea. Discutem-se as implicações políticas e existenciais dessas categorias que, ao nomear, afetam vidas, forjando sentidos e práticas que evidenciam como vidas são diferencialmente afetadas pelos acontecimentos.

Abstract Taking as the starting point ongoing research on the memory of violent events, this essay focuses on contemporary exile, as a forced displacement that changes the circumstances of life, due to unavoidable impositions. Whatever its form and circumstance, exile, a disruptive experience, is crossed by pain. Based on the figures of the political exile, the one that emerges in the Latin American dictatorships of the 20th century, and of the refugee as an emblematic figure of current exile, it interrogates the suffering as a subjective experience associated with the emptying or erasing of the political meaning of exile in its contemporary form. It discusses the political and existential implications of these categories which, by naming, affect lives, forging meanings and practices that highlight how lives are differentially affected by events.

Resumo Neste artigo analiso a constituição da casa e da rua como espaços de violação e supressão das existências de pessoas LGBTQIAP+. As experiências constitutivas desses lugares derivam das memórias das pessoas que habitam e moram na Casa 1, uma casa de acolhimento e um centro cultural, situado na cidade de São Paulo. Por meio das lembranças dessas pessoas, mostrarei, em primeiro lugar, como a casa da família é um lugar onde seus desejos e subjetividades são violentados diariamente, produzindo uma experiência comum do insuportável e do irrespirável. Num segundo momento, demonstrarei como a rua, após o processo de expulsão da casa da família, transforma-se num espaço de perigo e de risco para a vida dessas pessoas LGBTQIAP+, criando outra experiência compartilhadas entre elas. Dessa forma, argumento, por fim, que a família se transforma em um agente destrutivo e de risco para a vida de seus filhos e filhas LGBTQIAP+.

Abstract In this article I analyze the constitution of the house and the street as spaces for violating and suppressing the existences of LGBTQIAP+ people. The constitutive experiences of these places derive from the memories of the people who inhabit and live in Casa 1, a shelter and cultural center located in the city of São Paulo. Through the remembrances of these people, I will show, firstly, how the family home is a place where their desires and subjectivities are violated daily, producing a common experience of the unbearable and the unbreathable. Secondly, I will demonstrate how the street, after the process of expulsion from the family home, becomes a space of danger and risk for the lives of these LGBTQIAP+ people, creating another shared experience among them. In this way, I argue, finally, that the family becomes a destructive agent and a risk to the lives of their LGBTQIAP+ children.

Resumo Este artigo propõe uma análise inicial dos dados sobre pertencimento religioso do Censo brasileiro de 2022, divulgados pelo IBGE em junho de 2025. O objetivo principal é duplo: em primeiro lugar, apresentar uma análise escrita “no calor da hora”, que situe os números recém-divulgados em relação às séries históricas e às interpretações já consolidadas sobre os censos anteriores. Em segundo lugar, o texto busca destacar o que emerge, à luz desses dados, como parte fundamental da agenda de pesquisa para a próxima década no campo religioso brasileiro, sugerindo novas questões e abordagens para estudos futuros. A análise acompanhará os grandes grupos religiosos tal como o próprio IBGE apresenta seus dados: os católicos; os evangélicos; os sem religião; os de religiões afro e os de umbanda; e os espíritas.

Abstract This article proposes an initial analysis of the religious affiliation data from the 2022 Brazilian Census, released by the IBGE in June 2025. The main objective is twofold: firstly, to present an “on-the-spot” analysis that contextualizes the newly released figures in relation to historical series and consolidated interpretations of previous censuses. Secondly, the text aims to highlight what emerges, in light of these data, as a fundamental part of the research agenda for the next decade in the Brazilian religious field, suggesting new questions and approaches for future studies. The analysis will follow the major religious groups as presented by the IBGE itself: Catholics; Evangelicals; non-religious; Afro and Umbanda religions; Spiritism.
