Larp: A Political Slang? An Essay on the Emergence of the Use of the Term

Abstract

This essay is based on concerns about the emergence of the term larp in media coverage of political phenomena, especially in alternative journalism outlets. The term - originating from the acronym for live action role-play - refers to a playful practice that has occurred in various locations around the world for at least 50 years. However, its insertion in the political context did not attribute an explicit meaning, so the objective of this study is to identify the meanings used, with the aim of systematizing and discussing them. As a finding, there is a pejorative use of the term, so that the essay ends by proposing other meanings that are linked to the term larp and that could be appropriated by political discussion.
