Open-access MACHADO DE ASSIS, THE BOOK, AND THE METABOOK

This article approaches the representation of the book in the work of Machado de Assis, either as an object that stimulates bibliophilia and certain reflections or as a form of graphic-visual analogies. It is from the book that Machado shows both the motivations of his narrative consciousness and the figurations of his typographic consciousness. These ways of approaching the book can be seen in the short story “Casa velha” and in the novels Helena, Quincas Borba, Dom Casmurro and Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. As for the theoretical framework, it highlights contributions from Chartier (1999), Robert Darnton (2010), Regina Zilberman (1998) etc.
