Preliminary observations on the vegetation of Goiás

In June 1947, I had the opportunity to study the phyto-ecological conditions of certain stretches of the state of Goiás, by appointment of the Dr. Henrique Aragão, Director of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz andin connection with bio-geographical work related to the choice of a new Federal Capital. Forner work, from 1945 on (see Mem. Inst. Osw. Cr., 44, (4) 1946 páginas 579-603 and Mem. Inst. Osw. Cr., 45, (1) 1947 pág. 253-272) in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, had already given me some insight into the importance of the CERRADO, both as a climatic unit and in regard to the bio-geography of Brazil. This type of vegetation, while well known from the point of niew of systematics, is practically unknown as to the role the component species within the associations and their reactions to the habitats. The observations now made in Goiás and those carried out before in the above-mentioned states will help to make it possible to attempt a monograph on the Vegetation of Western Central Brazil later, especially after gaining a general view of the whole region and completing sociological surveys of the Cerrado Associations of these states and that of Bahia.
