Abstract
Research on history of leisure in small towns and rural areas are still infrequent, despite the considerable bibliography already available on the subject. Trying to expand this universe of references, this article analyzes the historical dynamics of leisure in a small rural district, in the hinterland of Minas Gerais, in the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries. More specifically, we analyze the history of leisure in the city of Cláudio in this period. Through newspapers, criminal proceedings, memory books, photographs and census data, we present a historical interpretation in which the agricultural production is pointed out as the main explanatory element for the emergence of new modalities and regimes of leisure.
