HEALTH AND MENTAL DISORDERS IN HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETES: A MAPPING OF INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

Abstract:

Studies on the mental health of elite athletes have been growing internationally. However, Brazilian contribution to this theme is still limited. This systematic review aims to map the studies on the mental health of elite athletes, following the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. We found an increase in the number of publications in the last five years, with a predominance of publications by authors from English-speaking countries (USA, England/UK and Australia) focusing mainly on the most common mental disorders (anxiety, depression, sleep disorder, use of alcohol). We found that elite athletes have similar or higher rates of mental disorders than the general population. Team sports and athletic individual sports appear as the most investigated. This study advances the debate on mental health in elite athletes and draws the attention of Brazilian researchers, managers and psychologists to this theme.
