Original Article Differences in lobed gland structure and distribution in terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea) Chipanovska, Natasha Župunski, Vera Vittori, Miloš Abstract in English: Abstract Lobed tegumental glands are found only in terrestrial isopods and are thought to have evolved in response to challenges associated with life on land. By examining 30 terrestrial isopod species, we aimed to determine the factors that influence the structure and distribution of the lobed glands. We discovered that lobed glands are found not only in the lateral plates and the uropods but also in the cephalothorax, the antennae, the tergites, and the pereopods of some species. The structure of the lobed glands is influenced by the phylogenetic position of an isopod. Namely, species of Diplocheta, Microcheta, and Synocheta have only one nucleus in the secretory cell, while two nuclei occur in the secretory cells of Crinocheta. By contrast, the distribution of the lobed glands in the body is influenced by the eco-morphotype of a species. Clingers and runners have numerous large lobed glands throughout the body. Creepers possess well-developed uropod glands, while lobed glands are absent or small and few in number in their pereon. Rollers have fewer lobed glands and some species apparently lack them. We also showed that several species possess several types of lobed glands. The correlation of lobed gland distribution with the eco-morphotype speaks in favor of the proposed defensive function of lobed glands. |

Original Article Impact of thermal variation on the naupliar development of the copepod Apocyclops spartinus (Ruber, 1968) (Copepoda: Cyclopidae), under controlled conditions Sánchez-Dávila, Pedro Pablo Alonso Alejos-Cabrera, Ruth Milagros Gaspar-Reyes, Wilmer Dionicio-Acedo, Jhon Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Apocyclops spartinus is a subtropical resilient copepod from impacted Peruvian wetlands, widely used for marine fish larviculture and conserved as a strain at Instituto del Mar del Peru - IMARPE. This study was conducted to test the effects of three thermal conditions (16, 20 and 24 ºC) on the individual growth of conditioned nauplii. Sub-stage growth rates, three growth models and three growth rate-dependent models were evaluated. Considering these previous experiments, naupliar growth retardation and mortality were evaluated for cold shock stress (8 ºC lower). Results indicated a progressive increase in development time by reducing temperature from 24 to 20 ºC (1.75 times) and 20 to 16 ºC (4 times). Growth rates showed a tendency to decrease, prior to metamorphosis and independent of temperature. Gompertz was the best growth model by describing sigmoidal tendency of naupliar development. Arrhenius was the best growth rate-dependent model but slightly better supported than a simple allometric model. Naupliar growth retardation was noted in nauplii that were initially hatched at 24 ºC and then swiftly transferred to a culture at 16 ºC. This cold shock stress resulted in high mortality from day four onwards. In summary, A. spartinus nauplii exhibit potential as a live food source and it is recommended that targeted thermal treatments be employed to extend the time of optimal nauplii size and thereby enhance culture techniques of this species. |

Original Article First record of a cold-seep squat lobster Munidopsis lauensis Baba and de Saint Laurent, 1992 (Anomura: Galatheoidea) from Indian waters Gonsalves, Maria-Judith Tiwari, Shivam Padate, Vinay P. Deepak Trivedi, Jigneshkumar Abstract in English: Abstract The present study reports the first zoogeographical record of the squat lobster Munidopsis lauensis Baba and de Saint Laurent, 1992 from a cold-seep site in the Krishna-Godavari Basin (Bay of Bengal), Northern Indian Ocean. Molecular analysis of the partial mitochondrial gene coding for cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI mtDNA), and mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) validated its identity. The present observation extends its geographical distribution to the Northern Indian Ocean. Additionally, molecular barcodes (COI) were generated for Munidopsis scobina Alcock, 1894, Munidopsis wardeni Anderson, 1896, and Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 collected from the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone. |

Original Article Reproductive potential of the endangered land crab, Johngarthia lagostoma (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) (Brachyura: Gecarcinidae), from Trindade Island, Brazil Mosna, Esli E. D. Oliveira, Maria A. M. João, Marcio C. A. Pinheiro, Marcelo A. A. Abstract in English: Abstract An analysis of reproductive potential can elucidate significant aspects of the population biology and evolution of brachyuran crabs, providing a crucial baseline for conservation efforts concerning endangered species. Johngarthia lagostoma is an endemic species to Atlantic Oceanic islands (Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha, Ascension, and Trindade), and it is classified as endangered (EN) in Brazilian territory according to IUCN criteria. Until now, the reproductive potential of this species has only been described for the Ascension Island population. Therefore, we assessed the reproductive effort and fecundity of J. lagostoma on Trindade Island. A total of 43 ovigerous females in the final stage of embryonic development were analyzed. Their egg masses were removed, weighed, and counted using a volumetric method. The carapace width ranged from 55.3 to 100.1 mm (mean ± standard deviation: 75.2 ± 13.1 mm). It exhibited a good fit and positive correlation with the egg weight and fecundity data but a poor fit and negative correlation with reproductive effort. The contrasting results of fecundity (82,938 ± 43,673 eggs) and reproductive effort (10.5 ± 1.5 %) recorded for J. lagostoma reveal a well-established population on Trindade Island compared to Ascension Island. These observations provide valuable information for proposing more effective management strategies for this endangered species across these Atlantic oceanic islands. |

Original Article Holocene Bythocytheridae (Ostracoda: Podocopida) from Southwestern Atlantic deep-sea sediments off Brazil. Part 1: tribes Bythocytherini Sars, 1926 and Jonesini Schornikov, 1981 Bergue, Cristianini Trescastro Forel, Marie-Béatrice Anjos-Zerfass, Geise de Santana dos Brandão, Simone Nunes Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The Bythocytheridae Sars, 1866 is one of the oldest families of cytheroidean Ostracoda, with a fossil record dating back to the Silurian. During the Cenozoic this family became one of the main constituents of the deep-sea ostracod faunas, with some taxa reaching wide geographic distribution. Bythocytherids are, therefore, important for the understanding of evolution and paleobiogeography in marine Ostracoda. The main purpose of this paper is to present a study of the tribes Bythocytherini Sars, 1926 and Jonesini Schornikov, 1981 through the analysis of 47 sediment samples collected from 12 sites in the Rio Grande Rise and adjacent areas. The 11 species herein recorded are attributed to the genera Bythocythere Sars, 1866 (four species), Bythoceratina Hornibrook, 1952 (two species), Retibythere Schornikov, 1981 (two species), Rhombobythere Schornikov, 1982b (two species), and Ruggieriella Colalongo and Pasini, 1980 (one species). The occurrence of the bythocytherid species in the study area seems strongly influenced by the bathymetry, being more abundant in the shallowest site (~1,250 m) and absent beyond 3,000 m water depth. |

Original Article New morphological data on Colobomatus belizensis Cressey and Schotte, 1983 (Copepoda: Philichthyidae), parasitic in the mandibular canals of the white grunt, Haemulon plumierii (Lacepède, 1801) (Actinopterygii: Haemulidae) off Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil Lopes, Jonatha Couto, João Victor Pereira, Felipe Bisaggio Paschoal, Fabiano Abstract in English: ABSTRACT New morphological and morphometric data on females of Colobomatus belizensis Cressey and Schotte, 1983 is provided based on specimens collected from the mandibular canals of Haemulon plumierii (Lacepède) in Sepetiba Bay, state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Specimens were identified as C. belizensis by the presence of a smooth, not bifid, anterior cephalic process, two pairs of dorsolateral thoracic processes with rounded tips, and third abdominal somite with one pair of lateral process with rounded tips. The original description of the female of C. belizensis was superficial, lacking details on some structures with taxonomic value that are fully described here, such as the processes ornamented with six sensilla, caudal rami armed with 11 elements, as well as the armature of the legs and ornamentation of the buccal cone. These new data add robustness to the diagnosis and confirm the validity of C. belizensis, contributing to the taxonomy of the genus Colobomatus as a whole. |

Original Article First report of the ectosymbiont Temnocephala sp. (Platyhelminthes: Rhabdocoela) on two Macrobrachium species (Decapoda: Caridea) from the Brazilian Amazon Martins, Déborah Elena Galvão Boyko, Christopher B. Cintra, Israel Hidenburgo Aniceto Almeida Alves-Júnior, Flavio de Abstract in English: Abstract In aquatic environments, the presence of biological relationships occurring in different levels of the trophic chain is widely observed and reported in the literature, especially for invertebrates using other organisms as temporary or definitive hosts. These relationships are types of symbiosis, classified as parasitism, mutualism, or commensalism. The last frequently occurs in Platyhelminthes, including the symbiotic flatworm genus Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849, that are observed living on aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates in Central and South America. However, despite an extensive list of symbiotic relationships recorded for species in this genus, no Temnocephala species has ever been reported as an ectosymbiont of Amazon prawns. Herein we report the first occurrence of Temnocephala sp. adhered to Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862) and Macrobrachium surinamicum Holthuis, 1948, collected in the Brazilian Amazon. The prawn species and their ectosymbionts were collected in the Guamá River (01°27’54.2”S 048°26’02.6”W), between May and September 2023, using a local trap called “matapi”. We examined 108 specimens of M. amazonicum and 24 individuals of M. surinamicum; the prevalence for Temnocephala sp. was 12.96% and 16.67%, respectively, covering between one and three symbiotic flatworms per prawn. In addition, we discuss the temnocephalan/host interaction, and provide a list of Brazilian records of Temnocephala spp. on crustacean hosts. |

Original Article Morphology of the female reproductive system and seasonality in reproduction of the freshwater crab Arcithelphusa cochleariformis (Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) Dineshan, Sneha Devi, Arath Raghavan Sudha Abstract in English: Abstract This study details the female reproductive system morphology and seasonality in reproduction of the freshwater crab Arcithelphusa cochleariformis, widely distributed in the wetlands of Wayanad, India. Histo-morphological analyses reveal that the H-shaped female reproductive system displays the general eubrachyuran pattern. The seminal receptacle exhibits a novel combination of both heterotreme and thoracotreme patterns with ventrally attached oviduct and the presence of a mono-layered columnar secretory epithelium lining the dorsal and ventral regions. The simple type vagina, covered by a cuticle, follows the heterotreme pattern. The seminal receptacle and vagina undergo changes parallel to the annual mating and ovarian cycle. The seminal receptacle appears small, collapsed, enclosing very few secretions before mating in the proliferation phase and swollen, containing enormous spermatophores and seminal plasma after mating in the previtellogenic phase. The seminal receptacle has a withered appearance in the primary and secondary stages of vitellogenic phase and with decreased amounts of seminal plasma and several freely dispersed spermatozoa concentrated at the ventral region during the tertiary vitellogenic stage. |

Original Article In the depths of the Amazon rainforest: a new troglobitic species of Circoniscus (Isopoda: Scleropactidae) from Brazil Galo, Júlia Barbosa Cardoso, Giovanna Monticelli Ferreira, Rodrigo Lopes Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Scleropactidae are one of the most abundant families of Oniscidea, comprising 28 genera. Within this family, the genus Circoniscus includes 13 species, of which four are troglobitic. We herein describe the fifth troglobitic species of the genus, which represents the first species described from the largest limestone cave of the Brazilian Amazon, Paraíso cave. Circoniscus paradisus sp. nov. differs from the troglobitic species by the presence of schisma on pereonite 1 in all specimens, antennula with 2+9 aesthetascs, distal margin of male pleopod 1 exopod elongated, and pereonites epimera inner face with continuous ridge. Additionally, we provide ecological notes, habitat description, and the conservation status for the newly described species. |

Original Article An overlooked invader: Cryptorchestia garbinii (Amphipoda: Talitridae) colonizing Serbian banks of the Danube Vujić, Mihailo Gojšina, Vukašin Marković, Vanja Vesović, Nikola Abstract in English: Abstract The talitrid Cryptorchestia garbinii is a terrestrial and riparian European amphipod, distributed throughout the continent and well-known as a recent invader of the shores and banks of many water bodies. In the last decades, the species significantly expanded its range in the Balkans. First records of this species in Serbia are presented here and include descriptions of the habitats. The species was found at several localities alongside the Danube at the Iron Gates. The species was first observed in the Serbian section of the river in 2017. Abundance at this time was very high indicating that colonization almost certainly occurred much earlier. We discuss possible reasons why the species was not detected in Serbia before, as well as probable ways of its arrival and spread. Even though C. garbinii is the eighth allochthonous amphipod detected in Serbia, it is the first semiterrestrial representative, and also, the first one from the infraorder Talitrida recorded in the country. |

Original Article Larvae of Armases rubripes (Decapoda, Brachyura) in Amazon oligohaline creeks: larval exportation? Brigida, Yan Rafael Gillet Santa Lima-Pismel, Francielly Alcântara de Brito, Ana Beatriz Gama Martinelli-Lemos, Jussara Moretto Abstract in English: Abstract Three oligohaline creeks in the Amazon region with different levels of anthropogenic contamination were monitored quarterly regarding the larval density of Armases rubripes and their relationship with temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, as well as the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, biochemical, oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, fecal coliforms, and some dissolved ions, between March 2011 and January 2012. A total of 17,949 A. rubripes larvae in the zoea I developmental stage were identified in the creeks, suggesting export to the continental shelf. Larvae were present every four months, but the highest density occurred in the Amazon rainy season (January), indicating the reproductive peak of the species. Furthermore, we found that the greatest larval abundance and distribution occurred in the most preserved creek, with the lowest concentration of nitrogenous compounds and coliforms. The generalized linear model indicated that conductivity and total suspended solids content are positively correlated with larval density whereas salinity and Ca concentration are negatively correlated with larval density. Therefore, the water quality is concluded to be a structuring factor for the larval population of A. rubripes. |

Original Article New host records of parasitic isopods of Tropical Eastern Pacific marine fishes, with remarks on the taxonomy and distribution of the species Grano-Maldonado, Mayra Ixchel León, Gerardo Pérez-Ponce de Aguirre-Villaseñor, Hugo Salgado-Barragán, José Abstract in English: Abstract Marine fishes harbor a wide array of metazoan parasites, including helminths and crustaceans such as copepods and isopods. Even though the coast of Sinaloa stands out in Mexico by the volume of captured marine fishes, information about the diversity of their parasites is still very scarce. Isopods belonging to the families Cymothoidae, Gnathiidae, Corallanidae, and Aegidae are composed of temporary or obligate ectoparasites of the skin, gills, gill-chamber, or mouth of marine fishes across the world. In this study, we report data on the presence of isopods of the families Cymothoidae, Gnathiidae, and Aegidae infecting fishes from three localities at Sinaloa, Mexico. Fishes were obtained from commercial capture and the body surface, gill chamber, and mouth were examined for parasitic isopods. We report five parasitic isopod taxa in 16 fish host species, including Ceratothoa gilberti (Richardson, 1904), Nerocila californica Schioedte and Meinert, 1881, a potential new species identified as Cymothoa sp. A, Rocinela signata Schioedte and Meinert, 1879, and praniza and zuphea larvae of Gnathiidae species. Also, we compiled information on previous records of these species in marine fishes along the Mexican Pacific coast and discussed the importance of our findings for understanding the diversity and distribution patterns of these ectoparasites in the Southeastern Gulf of California. |

Original Article Some porcelain crabs (Decapoda: Anomura) from the Andaman Sea, India, with an identification key to Indian porcellanids Tiwari, Shivam Padate, Vinay P. Cubelio, Sherine Sonia Osawa, Masayuki Abstract in English: Abstract The present study provides systematic accounts of three porcellanid species collected onboard Fishery Oceanographic Research Vessel “Sagar Sampada” from the Andaman Sea. The record of Petrolisthes scabriculus (Dana, 1852) confirms the occurrence of this species in Indian waters. Polyonyx biunguiculatus (Dana, 1852) is reported for the first time from India. Porcellanella haigae Sankarankutty, 1963, previously described from the Gulf of Mannar, is recorded for the first time from the Andaman Sea. An updated identification key to all the 33 species of porcellanid crabs known from the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone is also provided. |

Original Article Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda species in six urban ponds of Aguascalientes, Mexico Retes-Pruneda, Ana Ekaterina Briano, Marcelo Silva Martínez, Roberto Rico Moreno, Jaime Antonio Escoto Ortiz, Araceli Adabache Abstract in English: Abstract A range of studies have reported that urban ponds can support substantial numbers of species despite being near human habitats. Therefore, it is important to know the species that are found in urban ponds, as well as to identify the environmental variables that influence the communities and the differences between sites in terms of species composition. In the present study, four samplings were carried out during a one-year period, collected in the months of November 2020 (autumn), January (winter), April (spring) and July (summer) of 2021 in six urban ponds found in recreational parks in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Taxonomic studies revealed the presence of 61 zooplankton species of which Rotifera represented 40 species, Cladocera with 16 species and Copepoda five species. The study yielded nine new records for the state, six species belonging to Rotifera 1) Collotheca ornata, 2) Lecane arcula, 3) Lecane decipiens, 4) Lophocharis salpina, 5) Lepadella ehrenbergii, 6) Proalides tentaculatus, and three species of Cladocera 7) Leydigia cf. striata, 8) Sida crystallina, and 9) Simocephalus mixtus. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was applied to elucidate the relationship between environmental variables: temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, nitrate, phosphate chloride and total hardness and observed genera. CCA suggested chloride, phosphate, and total hardness to be the major factors in structuring the zooplankton community. Alpha diversity (α) and beta diversity (β) between localities were analyzed, determining that the species composition is different between the sampling sites. |

Original Article Growth parameters and age estimates of the mouthless crab, Cardisoma crassum Smith, 1870 (Brachyura: Gecarcinidae) from the Montijo Gulf, Pacific coast of Panama Lombardo, Roberto C. Abstract in English: Abstract The asymptotic carapace width (L ∞ ) and growth coefficient (k) parameters of the mouthless crab, Cardisoma crassum, were estimated, and the von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to predict mean crab carapace width at different ages. From November 2014 to September 2015 and January 2021 to February 2024, a total of 967 crabs were sampled from five mangrove sites within the Montijo Gulf, Pacific coast of Panama. The modal decomposition method was applied to identify age groups, where the best model fit was obtained with eight age classes and the parameters: L ∞ = 91.51 mm, k = 0.24 year-1, and L 1 = 17.14 mm. Mean carapace width was 60.89 ± 7.70 mm with corresponding ages between 4.69-4.82 years. The estimated t max was 12.81 years, corresponding to a carapace width of 86.96 mm, while the age at first maturity was estimated at 4.77 years, with a corresponding carapace width of 61.01 mm. The L ∞ exceeded the maximum observed carapace width (88.30 mm), suggesting that crabs can attain larger sizes than those observed. This is the first systematic estimate of growth parameters and age in C. crassum from the Montijo Gulf, providing valuable information for future management of this fishery resource. |

Original Article Influence of salinity on the biology of the Neotropical cladoceran Moina eugeniae Olivier, 1954 (Branchiopoda: Moinidae) Vignatti, Alicia María Echaniz, Santiago Andrés Cabrera, Gabriela Cecilia Abstract in English: Abstract Moina eugeniae Olivier, 1954 is a common cladoceran species in the zooplankton of saline lakes in central Argentina. Information on this species comes mainly from field studies, and there are few data on its tolerance to environmental factors that help explain its geographic distribution. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of salinity on its biology through bioassays. Treatments were carried out with 7, 17, and 27 g/L of salt. Offspring less than 24 h old were placed in 25 mL containers. Every 48 hours until death, the medium was renewed, the offspring were fed with Chlorella vulgaris and the moults were measured. The optimum salinity was 17 g/L, which resulted in the highest survival and number of moults (29 ± 2.9 days and 10 ± 0.9 moults), the greatest number of clutches and total offspring per female (8 ± 1.07 clutches and 135 ± 13.14 offspring), and the largest size (1.97 ± 0.13 mm). While the best performance was found with 17 g/L salinity, indicating the halophilic character of this species, the lowest values at 7 and 27 g/L indicate some stress. Thus, changes in the salinity of lakes due to climate change could negatively affect the current geographic distribution of M. eugeniae. |

Original Article Light and electron microscopic studies of hemocytes in the endemic freshwater crab Arcithelphusa cochleariformis (Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) Anjali-Krishna, Pothera Veedu Smija, Moorkoth Kunnath Abstract in English: Abstract The morphological and structural characterization of hemocytes was made in the endemic freshwater crab, Arcithelphusa cochleariformis using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and the present study provides valuable information about the cell mediated immune responses of this freshwater crab. The ultrastructural studies show four types of hemocytes: agranulocyte, granulocyte I, granulocyte II and semi-granulocyte. Agranulocytes are oval to elongate and contain free ribosomes, RER cisternae and a few mitochondria with parallel cristae. They are mostly devoid of granules but rarely a few (1-3) small granules can be observed in their cytoplasm. Our results demonstrate that the circulating agranulocytes are phagocytic in function as evident from their prominent large bulbous pseudopodial projections. Granulocytes I are round or oval in shape, possess abundant granules of differing size, shape and electron densities and their cytoplasm contains mitochondria, free ribosomes, vacuoles and lysosomes. Granulocytes II are roughly spherical or round, display RER cisternae, mitochondria and large dense granules. Certain granulocyte II cells resemble autophagosomes and include materials at various stages of degeneration and multivesicular bodies, suggesting an autophagy function. Semi-granulocytes are round, oval, elongate or irregular cells with free ribosomes, RER cisternae, mitochondria, vesicles and lysosomes. They display lysosomal compartments with phagocytized materials and melanin deposition. We here suggest their possible role in the phagocytosis and melanization process. |

Original Article Size at sexual maturity in female Euphylax robustus (Brachyura: Portunidae) collected in coastal waters off Ecuador Cedeño, Johan Zambrano, René Abstract in English: Abstract Size at sexual morphometric and physiological maturity was estimated in females of the swimming crab, Euphylax robustus. The individuals were caught as bycatch in an artisanal trawl fishery targeting Titi shrimp (Protrachypene precipua) in coastal waters off Ecuador. A total of 73 females measuring 37 to 97 mm CW were analyzed. Size at morphometric sexual maturity was estimated using the following models: linear, broken stick, and two segments. The best model was selected by Akaike's information criteria bias corrected. Physiological maturity was established by identifying individuals as mature or immature by the color and width of their ovaries; subsequently, a logistic curve was fitted. Size at morphometric sexual maturity was 71.52 mm CW, and the physiological was 69.31 mm CW. Immature individuals showed ovaries with a cream color or that were semitransparent. The ovaries in mature individuals were light orange-yellow, and intense orange. This is the first report of sexual maturity in E. robustus. We assume that different crab species, with a similar mean size or modal like female E. robustus, could present size at sexual maturity between 67 to 72 mm CW. |

Original Article Unexpected colonization: new records of Sylviocarcinus australis (Brachyura: Decapoda: Trichodactylidae) in the upper Paraná drainage, southern Brazil Arantes, Tiago Bochini, Gabriel L. Geremias, Henrique Teixeira, Gustavo Monteiro Mantelatto, Fernando Luis Abstract in English: Abstract The decapod family Trichodactylidae is widely distributed in river systems of South America. However, the first record of Sylviocarcinus australis in the state of Paraná, Brazil, is reported herein, suggesting a possible human introduction, or lack of previous records, for a species whose known occurrences to date are in the Paraguay-middle Paraná River basins. The presence of S. australis in the upper Paraná River basin raises questions about its origin, extension of its occurrence and any possible ecological impacts. As this is a single record of adult males, with no females or juveniles recorded so far in the sampled area, it is not possible to conclusively trace the effective establishment of the species in this area. However, the proximity of the area to Iguaçu National Park, an important conservation area, highlights the possible presence of the species in a sensitive conservation area, with an imminent need to monitor local biodiversity. Examples of introductions of other species of freshwater crabs have shown that there are problems in coexistence with local, native species, and so understanding the potential ecological impacts of this species is crucial to ensuring the preservation of these local species. |

Original Article Morphological and molecular characterization of Pleopodias species (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) collected from Japanese waters Fujita, Hiroki Saito, Nobuhiro Aiba, Sorari Nakano, Tomoyuki Shimomura, Michitaka Abstract in English: Abstract Cymothoidae are parasitic isopods that infest fishes inhabiting marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. The cymothoids of the genus Pleopodias Richardson, 1910 are crustaceans that parasitize on the body surface of fish. Four species are known in the genus, of which Pleopodias diaphus Avdeev, 1975 is the only species recorded from Japanese waters. In this study, morphological observations and molecular analyses based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA sequences were conducted on P. diaphus and Pleopodias sp. from Diaphus schmidti Tåning, 1932. Pleopodias diaphus and Pleopodias sp. were included in the same clade in the 16S rRNA tree, but there was a 16.14% genetic difference between the two species, so Pleopodias sp. may be an unrecorded species in Japan. In this study, molecular biological analysis of Pleopodias was provided for the first time. In the phylogenetic tree, Pleopodias diverged earlier than other cymothoid species that are externally attaching species, so it is possible that it is closer to the ancestor of externally attaching species. |

Review Illustrated type catalogue of marine Isopoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, Brazil Serejo, Cristiana S. Fernandes, Agatha C. S. Abstract in English: Abstract The Crustacea Collection of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ is one of the most relevant and representative of the Brazilian crustacean fauna. Currently, it comprises around 31,000 registered lots, of which 5,435 lots belong to the order Isopoda. This paper provides an illustrated catalog of two topotype species and 34 type species of marine isopods deposited at the Crustacea Collection of Museu Nacional/UFRJ, distributed in 22 genera, 12 families and six suborders. This collection is represented by 27 lots of holotypes, 81 lots of paratypes (15 named as allotypes), and two topotypes, published mainly by authors such as Alceu Lemos de Castro and Idalina Brasil-Lima, former researchers of Museu Nacional in the 20th century. The two topotypes species were included in the catalog as they came from the same collection event as the holotype and have been historically kept as type material within the museum collection. In general, the type materials are in good condition, however, the holotype of Robustura parvula (Albuquerque, 1978) and all type material of Pseudione serejoae Brito, Cardoso and Boyko, 2018 have been lost and await the designation of neotypes. Furthermore, this catalog is part of a larger project, in an effort to improve the curation and digitization of the museum´s type collection data. By photographing the specimens and digitizing the collection specimens´ labels, we expect to improve internal management and offer free access to the data, so as to preserve and promote the museum´s collections, which guard important and unique information on world biodiversity. |

Short Communication The burrow structure of Minuca osa (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from the eastern Montijo Gulf, Panamanian Pacific Lombardo, Roberto C. Abstract in English: Abstract Between November 2022 and March 2023, thirty-seven Minuca osa burrow plaster casts were poured while simultaneously collecting biometric data of the occupants in Ponuga, eastern Montijo Gulf, Panamanian Pacific. Casts revealed a highly variable structure with straight and spiral sections, reaching depths down to 122 cm (mean ± SD = 73.20 ± 28.66 cm). Burrow depth and length did not differ between sexes; however, males exhibited larger burrow diameter (25.9 ± 4.61 mm) compared to females (19.48 ± 1.65 mm; Mann-Whitney, P < 0.001). Male carapace width (23.4 ± 2.15 mm) surpassed that of females (18.42 ± 1.73 mm; Mann‐Whitney, P < 0.001). Female carapace length (r 2 = 0.793) and male chela length (r 2 = 0.769) were correlated to diameter. This study presents the first description of M. osa burrow structure, providing valuable insights into this understudied species. |

Short Communication Expanding the knowledge of Hyalella Smith, 1874 (Amphipoda: Hyalellidae) for southeast Brazil: two new troglophilic species from caves of the Atlantic Rainforest Deotti, Carolina Mendes Penoni, Ludmila Rocha Bichuette, Maria Elina Bueno, Alessandra Angélica de Pádua Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The present work describes two new species of Hyalella Smith, 1874 from two different state parks in Southeastern Brazil. Both species were collected in well-preserved and conserved areas of the Atlantic Rainforest, the first from the Parque Estadual Intervales (PEI) and the other from the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR). The two species are troglophilic, i.e., facultative cave-dwellers. They are found inside the caves but do not present any noticeable adaptation to life underground. Hyalella bocaina sp. nov. most distinguishable features include the palp of maxilla 1 reaching almost half the distance between base of the palp and base of setae on the outer plate, gnathopod 1 propodus inner face with serrate setae, peduncle of the pleopod covered with several setules, uropod 1 of the male without curved seta, and the uropod 3 shorter than the telson. Hyalella temimina sp. nov., although found exclusively inside of the Temimina II cave, does not present troglomorphisms, and its main characteristics are the relatively long palp of maxilla 1, the rich ornamentation of the telson, gnathopod 1 propodus inner face with pappose setae, uropod 1 of the male without curved seta, and the excavation of the apex of the ramus of uropod 3. Here we increase the number of Hyalella species known for Brazil from 42 to 44. |

Short Communication Occurrence of ovigerous females of Callinectes bocourti A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 (Decapoda: Portunidae) on the Amazon Continental Shelf Bezerra, Amanda C. S. Nóbrega, Priscila S. V. Hashiguti, Danielly T. Martinelli-Lemos, Jussara M. Abstract in English: Abstract The family Portunidae comprises a diverse group of crabs, with 336 described species. Although they are easily collected and widely distributed in coastal regions, the life history of Callinectes bocourti remains poorly understood. This species is abundant in Amazon estuaries; however, ovigerous females have never been found throughout the various studies carried out in the region, which compromises the understanding of its reproductive cycle. We investigated the presence of C. bocourti ovigerous females in the Amazon Continental Shelf (ACS), Brazil, to confirm the migration of these females to areas outside the oligohaline estuary where the population is abundant. The specimens were captured as bycatch during industrial shrimp fishing on the Brazilian North Coast between February and March 2016. Twelve individuals of C. bocourti were found: three males, five adult females, and three ovigerous females, which is the first record of their occurrence on the ACS. This information can help manage this resource, as the species is exploited for commercial and subsistence means in estuarine fishing communities in the Amazon coastal zone. |

Short Communication Corrections for grammatical agreement in Joeropsididae (Malacostraca: Isopoda) Littauer, Richard Abstract in English: Abstract Joeropsididae Nordenstam, 1933 contains three genera: Joeropsis Koehler, 1885, Rugojoeropsis Just, 2001, and Scaphojoeropsis Just, 2001. Each of their generic names ends in the Latin transliteration of the feminine Greek word ὄψῐς (opsis). Combined species-group names must agree in gender with the genus-group name according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999) Article 31.2. An updated list of the species names in Joeropsididae is provided accordingly. Eight species names are corrected for gender: Joeropsis bifasciata Kensley, 1984a, Joeropsis denticulata Kim, Kim and Yoon, 2022, Joeropsis indica Müller, 1991, Joeropsis integra Kensley, 1984b, Joeropsis intermedia Nordenstam, 1933, Joeropsis limbata Kensley, 2003, Joeropsis minuta Müller, 1989, and Joeropsis personata Kensley, 1984. |
