Mobile Subjectivities: Meanings of Periphery and Perceptions of the Crisis among Uber Drivers in Recife

ABSTRACT

Our study examines how Uber drivers’ experiences of urban geography in the city of Recife influenced their reflections on the 2018 presidential elections. We argue that the drivers’ movement through the urban landscape, seeking to reconcile the desire for individual agency with desperation over increasingly dire political and economic prospects, complexifies their understanding of center and periphery and gives rise to “mobile subjectivities”.
