This article discusses the transformations that occurred through the 1990’s in the social conditions at the São Paulo metropolis as a whole and at its different spaces. Although that decade had negative economic results, indicators of several social dimensions suggest an improvement on the average material conditions for the major part of the city. However, our results also point out to the maintenance of the pre-existent spatial inequalities, as well as for an apparent rise of the income inequalities. Our main goal is to present and discuss evidences of these processes, dialoguing with the academic debates about social conditions in the city.
