ABSTRACT
The literature about prison gangs and their expansion mostly reinforces police-journalistic assumptions that “organized crime” expands itself by forcibly disputing drug “routes” and other illegal markets. As a counterpoint to this perspective, we look at the daily lives of marginalized populations, among whom the criminal world has been expanding for decades as an alternative for social mobility.
