Rupture and Coalition: The “Lula-Alckmin” Alliance and the Party Recomposition of Liberal Democracies

ABSTRACT

The alliance between former president Lula and former governor of São Paulo Geraldo Alckmin has been the object of different interpretations. This article argues that the partnership between the two former opponents is more than just another electoral coalition typical of Brazilian politics. It is a pragmatic response to the dilemmas of social-democracy in the 21st century that more or less dramatically affect all liberal democracies.
