From the 2013 Riots to the 2018 Election in Brazil: Searching for an Institutional Approach

ABSTRACT

The paper debates the current explanations about the current Brazilian political crisis. The ideia that the crisis has no institutional origins considers specific rules and relies on a particular definition of institution. This approach generates a contextual or ad hoc explanation. We argue an institutional interpretation of the crisis depends on two modifications: the possibility of institucional change and the interaction between a larger set of political institutions.
