Agrobiodiversity: Public Policies for Safeguarding Traditional Agricultural Systems and Challenges in the Brazilian Context

Brazilian biodiversity results from a historical process that characterizes the dynamic interaction between traditional peoples and populations with nature itself. Traditional Agricultural Systems represent an expression of this socio-cultural construction, being fundamental for food security and sovereignty, the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, the mitigation and resilience to the effects of climate change, and the protection of intangible cultural heritage. Therefore, the conservation of these systems should be promoted by the State, based on the socio-environmental rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution. In this context, the objective of this article is to problematize the main existing national public policy instruments directed at this agenda, seeking to outline a baseline that can contribute to guiding future paths for governmental action in the coming years. Based on bibliographic and documental research, it can be affirmed that, although a public policy specifically dedicated to the theme, addressing the elements characterizing these systems in an integrated manner, has not yet been identified, important existing legal instruments in Brazil may inspire future actions with this direction.
