The integration of Psychology in units of support for the Family Health Program

The place of Psychology in the context of primary health care, specifically, in units of support for the Family Health Program (NASF) gains visibility due to the high level of demand on mental health in communities with psychosocial vulnerability, requiring deeper understanding about their new assignments. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the insertion of Psychology at NASF, identifying challenges and potentials of their performance in primary care based on perceptions of psychologists working at NASF in the city of Juazeiro do Norte-CE, Brazil. This is grounded in qualitative research methodology, and the techniques selected for obtaining empirical material were the semi-structured interviews and systematic observation. For the processing and interpretation of material obtained, we used the Discourse Analysis. The results allowed the discussion of three themes: 1) the role of psychology in NASF; 2) the implementation of NASF in the health network, and 3) the challenges of interdisciplinarity in primary care. The findings showed that Psychology still faces difficulties for an inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary work in primary care. However, it is clear that Psychology is seeking new ways of working to meet new health care demands in the city of Juazeiro do Norte.
