Use of integrative and complementary practices in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Depression stands out as one of the most debilitating illnesses worldwide. The difficulty in treating symptoms and discontinue use of medication has become a public health challenge. From this perspective, the study sought to evaluate the use of Integrative and Complementary Therapies as an auxiliary tool in the treatment of depression. A review was carried out using information collected on scientific database platforms, using keywords in Portuguese and English: depression, antidepressants, Integrative and Complementary Therapies and conventional treatments. From 210 articles found, 35 were selected and analyzed. The results revealed greater use of acupuncture, yoga and meditation in the treatment of depression and improvement of stress, anxiety, fatigue and adverse effects resulting from use of antidepressant medications. Limitations such as lack of qualified professionals and quality scientific material hinder the widespread use of those practices. As they require low investment costs in structures and materials, they have great potential for growth in the health system.
